Greetings mushers and fans!

Greetings mushers and fans!

After much discussion and a thorough trail check, the race committee has decided to CANCEL the 2016 Voyageurs Classic Sled Dog Race. The trails are marginal - at best. We only have two to three inches of compacted snow on the trails and the swamps are barely iced over. Our biggest concern is the safety of the mushers and the dogs. We just don’t want teams out on a marginal trail the first time folks can get onto a sled. This really doesn’t seem logical to us.

What can we say? One thing that is out of our control is the weather. In addition, we do not have enough entries, in either race, to provide a quality experience for the mushers, fans, and the over 130 volunteers that support our race.

This was a very, very difficult decision for the race committee as the committee logs hundreds of hours to organize and execute this event. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the race committee and ALL the volunteers that show up with enthusiasm and energy at each planning meeting and on race day. In addition, I’d like to give a hearty “thank you” to Dr. Jerry Vanek and his incredible vet crew – without their dedication, we could not hold a race.

All mushers will receive a check with a full refund (including PayPal fees) via USPS.

Respectfully,
Ellen Bogardus-Szymaniak
